Porn & politics

The Queensland State election has descended into a downward spiral of muck-raking that does little to inspire confidence in either side.  The latest installment in the race to the bottom is the likely leaking of the salacious information that a candidate standing for the Liberal National Party, Mark Bootham, was involved in the running of a soft porn site for several years.

Presumably the opposing Australian Labor Party will be all over this like a rash, calling for the candidate’s dis-endorsement, particularly since he is contesting a marginal seat, held by the ALP and one they are likely to lose (which would mean this fellow becomes an elected representative of the electorate).

Personally I don’t have any issue with the candidate being denied access to representative office.  Do we really want our Halls of Parliament graced by someone directing traffic to such low-brow content as “control your bitches”?  On International Womans’ Day his dis-endorsement would strike a blow against the objectification and exploitation of women.

What I do have issue with is the ALP pursuing this for political gain.  Candidate Mark Bootham rightfully points out that he hasn’t done anything illegal.

It’s one thing for the Australian Christian Lobby to question Bootham’s suitability for office – they have consistently rung the warning bells on the type of activity Bootham indulged in.  And for their efforts they have been labeled wowsers and moralists.

It’s entirely another thing for the ALP to jump on board since they have held the reins of power and by their inactivity up until this point have covertly endorsed what Bootham was up to.

We can only assume their assumption to the moral high ground is about politics, not treating women with respect and dignity.

What would be great would be for Bootham to go to the polls only to find his electorate, and particularly women in his electorate, treat him with the contempt he deserves.
